Maker's Spotlight: Roots Chocolates

Lisa Nelson of Roots Chocolates, an International Chocolate Awards winning company, makes creative chocolates in small batches right on her 4th generation family owned farm. Lisa strongly believes in sustainable farming, fair trade, and using local ingredients whenever possible.

Although she grew up on her farm in Wisconsin, she spent many years living and traveling in Europe, creating a business as a personal chef, and working in the IT industry. Luckily for us, she eventually made the decision to switch gears to something less stressful and more mindful: chocolate.

Lisa began her professional chocolate education in Vancouver, Canada and then interned with one of her instructors at her small shop in Vancouver. Seeking experience in a larger production shop, she sought another internship in Kansas. Packed with knowledge, experience, and recipes, she launched Roots Chocolates in December of 2010.

Her 70% bar, made with Enliven Cacao, begins with a subtle fruitiness and finishes with end notes of light coffee. You can find her creations at local farmers markets across Wisconsin, or contact Roots Chocolates directly to get your bars. Try one today!
